Spinnkers to and from Weymouth!! 15 boats competed in
the Magnum Weymouth races. Class 1 entries were reduced by coinciding with Cowes
week and 3 started. Class 2 had 8 entries and class 3 four entries.
Deity started the fleet both ways. The Friday night race saw the days
sun disappear before the start and some drizzle set in but spirits were not
dampened as the fleet set spinnakers by Anvil Point and explored the subtleties
of neap ebb tides. Spinnakers came down in the harbour entrance only after the
finish. Good job we all finished before the Weymouth Condor service arrived!
Temeraire gave assistance to Juno who had a fouled propeller.
Weymouth awoke to the surprise of an unexpected PYRA fleet!!
Communications had broken down but we had all found berths. A dank murky day did
not tempt many out to join in the Weymouth S C Portland Bill race. WSC had
kindly invited visiting racers to join them in their annual race around the Bill
to a mark off Chesil Beach near Fortuneswell and back. Billed as an opportunity
to keep crews from Weymouth's drinking holes until late in the day, only
Temeraire & Escapade were going until Juno's diver down made it too
difficult to get her out in time and Peter Biggs & Two fast Mike joined
Green Magnum. A S 5 with poor visibility did not look too promising, but PYRAs
honour was maintained as under IRC we would have won the WSC triphy. However as
Portsmouth Yardstick was in the S I we did not!!
A sunny Sunday saw the fleet start with spinnakers carried all the way
to Old Harry with the odd broaching demonstration as the wind freshened! More of
these following winds please!! (Thanks Geoff for this report (editor))
Thanks to Myriam for these photos. If anyone else took some why not forward them to your webmaster?
