RYA Advanced, Level 2, Instructors & Safety Boat Courses

All these courses are available only to club members.

Courses should be booked through the club office.

The courses are scheduled to fit in with the busy schedule of club racing and events.

The current costs (which will be confirmed on a place being offered) for these courses are

  • Advanced Powerboat - TBC
  • Safety Boat - £60
  • Powerboat Level 2 - £60

It is highly recommended that candidates also obtain a First Aid Certificate and a VHF SRC (GMDSS) certificate.

Level Two Powerboat

This course leads, on succesful completion, to the award of the RYA Powerboat level 2 certificate and hence follows the RYA syllabus. The course covers driving skills for powerboats such as the club RIBs and Nelsons. As a costal club the course we run includes basic navigation, collision regulations (IRPCS) and pilotage. The club can award this certificate with a coastal endorsement for candidates demonstrating the appropriate level of skill and knowledge in these areas.

To drive a club boat you must hold a qualification of at least this level.

Courses generally take place over a weekend, all day saturday and sunday. The courses have a significant practical content. Courses are also run in other formats, especially over evenings in the summer.

The course is predominantly on the water and practical in nature and takes approximately 16 hours. This can be longer if the Tuesday  evening course is taken.

For candidates already at Level 2 standard a Direct Assessment can be arranged.

Safety Boat

This course leads on succesful completion to the award of the RYA Safety Boat certificate and hence follows the RYA syllabus. This course covers the techniques for effective safety cover for racing dinghies and other craft. The course has a significant practical content which covers the recovery of crew in the water and dinghies sailed at Parkstone, including catermerans, single handers, skiffs and conventional dinghies. The course also covers the management of safety fleets for racing events and the identification and mitigation of risks in the sailing area. This is particularly relevent in a sailing area such as Poole Harbour.

Courses generally take place in the Autumn over three days

  • Friday evening - shore based lectures and preparation
  • Saturday - all day mainly water based practice
  • Sunday - morning providing safety cover to the racing at the club, afternoon wash up

Note: All Candidates Must hold a Powerboat Level 2 qualification. The candidates are expected to be confident RIB drivers as these are the main club safety boats. If you are uncertain of your RIB driving standard a pre-assessment can be arranged, which will only take half an hour.

Advanced Powerboat

This course includes chart work navigation at night. This course is generally held in support of specific club requirements. All Candidates Must Have Powerboat Level 2.

Instructor

The club has a small number of qualified instructors who give thier time as volunteers to run the above courses. Instructor courses are run using external trainers to train these instructors and as such are run infreqently.
