The season so far...
Saturday 1st and Sunday 2nd May
The second indicator event took place at Torquay. In race one, Alice's boat turtled on the start line during the starting sequence. Will Reid sailing with Ole Alcock started at the favoured Committee Boat end took advantage of the mayhem and had a commanding lead at the end of the first beat. In very testing conditions with a failing wind Will recorded his first top ten result in a major event as a helm finishing in sixth place. The wind died and no further racing was possible on the Saturday.
Sunday was colder with a very gusty NE wind. The Parkstone boats of Matt, Naomi and Alice all retired, leaving Will, now crewed by Alice, to finish the event as top Parksone boat in 20th position. Results.
It is now very unlikely that anyone from Parkstone will be in the World Team this year, the first time for many years. Results.
Meanwhilst at Parkstone, an excellent days training was provided by Duncan on Saturday, and on Sunday Katie Wetherall used her experience to win both races, with new helms Hannah and Kirsten enjoying their first racing in Cadets.
Friday 30th April
With no water and too much wind, the evening was unfortunately cancelled.
Sunday 25th April
With the southern zone squad boats away for their final weekend of training at Frensham Pond, Issy Hillard seized her chance and won both races from Katie Wetherall.
Friday 23rd April
Two seperate training sessions were run with the six boats combining for a race with many place changes.
Sunday 18th April
Race one started in 4knts. of wind with four boats OCS only two of which returning to start correctly. The wind dropped and a frustrating time was had until it filled from a south easterly direction.
In the second race, the wind filled to a fairly steady 6knts. The leading two boats were too focused upon each other to sail the correct course, leading the whole fleet to sail one triangle followed by two sausages. However it was for missing out the finish line at the end of the first round they were both disqualified by the race officer.
Friday 16th April
Not much wind and lots of tide tested the sailors concentration and ability to correctly set the sails and keep the boat moving smothly through the water.
Sunday 11th April
Six Cadet boats turned up for the first races of the season which took place in a North Easterly 12 knots of breeze over an olympic course.
At the winward mark of race one, two silver fleet boats - C'est La Vie sailed by Ole & Guy and Mrs Tweedy sailed by Katie & Nick rounded just behind the three gold fleet boats. The race then was pretty much a procession to the finish with Matt & Theo taking the gun from Will & Louis with Alice & Hannah in third.
In the second race the three gold fleet boats persisted in a tacking match up the first beat. Meanwhilst Issy & Josh's tactics of sailing in clear air nearly paid off as they rounded the winward mark just behind the leading bunch. On the second reach all boats dropped their kites and beat to the mark as the wind died and changed direction. With Matt & Theo having extended their lead in some rare puffs of wind, Will and Alice continued their duel with a luffing match down the run, Will only grabbing second place after Alice had to do a penalty turn after hitting the last mark and having to settle for third. Ole & Guy followed in fourth.
Inland Championships at Rutland
Bryony & Tara along with Matt & Theo ventured north to Rutland for two days of open training followed by the Inland Championships and first World Qualifier. The training took place in cool windy conditions whilst the racing took place in sunny light winds.
Matt & Theo reaped the rewards of their extensive winter training in the Zone Squad with two top ten finishes giving them 14th overall and the trophy as U13 Inland Champions for 2010. Results.
