30 Sept Details of Candlelight Dinner added to Social Page
15 SeptAs the sponsors of the racing this weekend, Sunday 21st September, I thought we would send a reminder about the event PYRA has planned. It promises to be a Fun Day with three short races back to back in the Bay followed by a social get together in the bar at Parkstone Yacht Club with sponsored drinks courtesy of Gentle Dentistry and prizegiving. Prizes will be awarded, how and to whom, will be revealed on the day but you will have to be there to receive them! Visiting PYRA boats are welcome to raft up on the hammer heads at the northern end of the marina for a short stay. If these are taken, radio the marina for an available space. Bacon butties are also going to be available in the morning and hot meals will be available in the club house from 3pm. Even the weather gods look like they might keep the high pressure in situ until Sunday so dig out the sun cream. Hope to see you all on Sunday

PHHS HandicapA general reminder to all boat owners. The Issue of PHHS Certificates is a yearly requirement, to be able to race in PYRA Class 3 it is necessary to have a current certificate which is valid up to the 31st December of each year. You must send a copy of your certificate to the Secretary before competing in any races. The handicap committee has recently met and discussed a number of issues which have arisen during the past year. In particulars there would appear to be a small number of anomalies with regards to fore sail calculations. In order to redress this some adjustments to the formula have been agreed to correct the problem. As a consequence there has also been a need to adjust some of the handicap allowances. In order to assist with as accurate measurements as possible, a list of standard hull dimensions are used where applicable. This database is of great help where more than one boat of a particular type (i.e.say Sonatas or MG27 etc) are racing in and out of the Harbour. It also helps to avoid inaccurate measurements being supplied to the handicapper and the arguments which may easily ensue. Obviously sail plans and sizes are a different matter and the handicapper must rely on the accuracy of the owner to provide the correct dimensions. The handicappers rely on your accuracy and honesty to ensure the systems is as fair as possible. It also relies on you being on time at the start of races and sailing your boat to is potential. The Committee of handicappers welcomed F Giles Alden who now represents the RMYC and members of the RM are advised that Giles will now deal with the issue of their PHHS Certificates commencing with 2006. To contact him please ring 01202 423071. The Issue of PHHS Certificates is a yearly requirement and does not cost an arm and a leg! PYRA CLASS THREE (PREVIOUSLY CLASS 3 AND CLASS A)
Firstly, the Association AGM took place during November and duly confirmed Roger Bond as the new class captain, with Brian Thompson relegated to Vice Captain. These elections confirmed the elections made at the Class A AGM. Consequent to the decision to combine Class A and Class 3 into a new Class 3, and no nominations from the old Class 3, Class A elected officers defaulted to become the new Captain and Vice Captain of Class 3.
It is hoped the new class will achieve increased turnouts over the previous separate classes. It does of course mean boats of differing sizes will be racing together but this will provide racing for an increased number of competitors. The new class will essentially race under the same rules as the old Class A, providing racing for short handed family cruisers using the free self-measured PHHS handicap system. Boats with crew numbers in excess of two will have their handicap increased by 1% for each extra crew over the age of Fourteen.
Boats competing in Class 3 races will need to observe equipment regulations for the particular race. Boats taking part in Category 3 races must comply with SSSN 20 stability requirements. The Red Book should be consulted in all cases for detailed regulations.
Enough of the Rules and Regulations.
There is talk of a number of new members with new boats, boding well for increased turn outs. You don’t have to do all the races, there are prizes for a number of individual races. If you turn out, it is likely you will win something, apart from the ‘toilet seat’. Prospective new members please get your boat measured and obtain a handicap from your club handicapper in plenty of time. Should you need any assistance or advice (not sailing) please contact me on 07799 603923, I will be pleased to help.
