Subject: 1st Summer with PYRA

1st season with PYRA

Just a quick note to say that looking back on my first season sailing
with PYRA, I have had a great time with some exciting sailing and
memorable socialising. On many of those weekends Beau Star would have
stayed on her mooring because of the weather forecast but if others are
going we don't want to be left behind, and it was seldom as bad as
forecast..

Thank you to the organisers and to the sponsors and see you next season.

Kind regards
John Woodruff

To the Folly and back

I agree with the comments made by Will Dennis . We also motored for over 6 hours as many others did .Well done Shebeen and the others that finished that race.
As for Sunday we made it to the start and we did finish if only last. A good weekend and challenging sailing.
Next Weymouth and the return to Poole. How about making the class 3 start at 0700 to give the slower boats a fair chance of sailing home.
My be its time to split class 3 this would probably keep IRC boats away from the slower class 3 boats on handicap. But it may be time to raise the lower  limit to PYRA.

Tides and small boats

Shame about the wind dying on Saturday, had been good up until then, but would the smaller boats have been able to beat the 3 - 4 knot tides in the Solent even if it had held up? We had to motor for a solid 6 hours at near maximum to get to Cowes.

A great evening at the Folly followed.

On Sunday the start line was moved 2.5 miles upwind and uptide from the start at Gunard set for 11.30. Although we sailed and then motored at "full chat" we were only able to make 2 - 2.5 knots against the 3 knot tide and hence did not arrive until 12.30, 20 minutes after the start. We were not alone and saw several other PYRA boats struggling (and failing) to make the start.

Conclusions -

1. Best to avoid setting races on weekends with Spring Tides unless certain the tide will be favourable.

2. Please allow time for the smaller brethren to make their way to a moved start line.

Looking forward to some great races in the future ...

Race retirements

I absolutely agree with Dave Best, there should be no problem shortening most races.

On another matter, does anyone else agree that it is a nonsense IRC boats racing Class 3 in the Two-Handed?

The success of Class 3 is to be welcomed, but please don't let it overwhelm Classes 1 & 2.

Race Retirements

This year, of the 4 cross channel races only 1 has had a reasonable number of boats finishing.

Also due to the number of entries in the cross channel, class 2 would have meant that a boat starting and then retiring in 3 of the 4 races would have in theory won the series.

Other races have also been dogged by multiple retirements many due to lack of wind and tide gates Poole – Weymouth, Jurassic Coast etc.

In tour de ports race this year times were taken on passing various marks of the course, in the event that all boats failed finished within the time limit these times would have been used to decide the race.

Can I suggest that this philosophy is adopted by PYRA, in that boats are required to take a time at certain positions / marks during a race, these marks / positions could be notified by the race officer / class captain as the course is announced on the radio. On cross channel races this could be a line of latitude for example from the GPS.

This does not mean that a decision needs to be taken to shorten a course during the race, as these times are only used if all boats in a class fail to finish.

This could give a more meaningful series of results, and also encourage boats to participate.

Any comments?

Regards,

Dave Best

Hi to the PYRA fleet.

Looking at the new website has made me a little homesick for the coastal racing on the Dorset coast and the occasional jaunts across the channel. Hope you all have a great summer of sailing, we’ll be thinking of you from our New Zealand winter.

Race Entries

Would it be a good idea that as yachts sign up for the week end races that the boat names are added to the web site so we can view who is going. Or are their too many line entries that we have left our computers behind by the time the list is closed

While it is useful and interesting to know who is entered a lack of entries could discourage entering when in the event a lot of line entries may occur.

Displayed entries tell the world that you will be away from home for the weekend and an  unscruplus vilian could find it usefull!
