Pearl Driving – It’s that time again!

Once again it’s time to appeal for volunteers for “Pearl driving”.  Last year saw several new volunteers which enabled me to spread the duties more thinly. Thank you for that to all of you who participated, and I hope you will be able to help out again this year. For those members who have not yet been involved, and in particular for those who make use of Pearl, I hope this may prompt you to think about helping with this very necessary function.

Pearl is a valuable facility for those cruising members moored out in the harbour, enabling them to extend their sailing times without the worry of getting to and from their moorings out of normal yard working hours. It does, however depend entirely on a pool of volunteers which consists mainly of those members who make regular use of the service. I try to organise it so each volunteer only has to do one or two week-ends per season, although some of us actually enjoy it so much we are quite happy to do more, and in some cases considerably more! It is good fun, it enables one to make new acquaintances, it extends one’s boat handling skills and, for new and associate members, it is one of the services to the club that is recognised in support of an application for full membership.

As last year, we are seeking drivers to cover the 19.00 and 20.00 runs on Friday evenings and Sunday evenings (or Monday if it is a Bank Holiday week-end), also to provide support for the yard staff by manning Pearl for the normal hourly runs during each day of the events weeks.

Please note: As last year, October cover is now limited to week ends; all that will be required during October is cover for Saturday and Sunday, with runs at 09.00, 10.00, 16.00, 17.00 each day. The weekday runs will be covered by the yard staff.

If you are willing to help and have not driven Pearl before, there are two steps you need to take:

1.Contact me (phone, letter or e-mail) and let me know you are willing to be added to the rota. I will send you a form on which you can indicate your availability.

2.You will need to be instructed in the driving of Pearl and assessed by one of the yard staff. To do this you need to contact Charlie Chapman or Keith Miller and arrange a time. This is not a Yachtmaster exam, just an hour’s trip out into the harbour to familiarise yourself with Pearl, and to ensure you are able to handle her safely and competently. If you are a competent yacht handler, it will be no problem at all!

Thank you for your help.
