POOLE BAY WIND FARM

You will be aware of the proposal for a 76 square mile offshore wind-farm to be sited 10.2 miles south of Bournemouth, 8.2 miles south east of Peveril and 8.4 miles south west of The Needles. Presently, your Committee is concerned at the impact and constraints that this will impose on our offshore sailing, particularly cross channel passages. It is probable that we will make representations, but first will endeavour to properly understand the proposals and what provisions are to be made for small recreational craft.

The developer’s (Eneco) website states that ‘Spacing between the turbines is yet to be determined but will be between 700m and 1km, leaving enough room for small vessels to pass through the wind park.’ Hmmm – strong cross tide, tacking into head wind and lousy visibility – should be easy and perfectly safe!

The proposals are on show at the RNLI today (17th March) but for those who couldn’t make it, further exhibitions are planned at:-

                    • Newport, Isle of Wight: Quay Arts Centre – Wednesday 23rd March 2011
                    • Lymington: Lymington Community Centre – Thursday 24th March 2011
                    • Christchurch: Regent Centre – Friday 25th March 2011
                    • Bournemouth: Pavilion Theatre – Wednesday 30th March 2011
                    • Swanage: Mowlem Theatre – Thursday 31st March 2011

Also Eneco will be making a presentation to the Parkstone YC Cruising Section on 12th April at 19:30. We are told that all are welcome.
