Alan Hescroff mastered the challenge of a light and extremely variable northerly wind combined with low tide occurring at the start time to set a triangular course for five hardy F15 crews on the Wednesday afternoon.
With a strong flooding tide across the start line, the fleet had to time their approach carefully before taking on the first beat to Outdoor Gear mark. Tide and wind conditions proved difficult to read but Colin Rainback and Jane Montgomery showed the fleet the way rounding the mark in first place closely followed by Simon Redhead and Mike Riley and Steve and Lisa Randle. Positions remained the same across the tight reach to Stakes after which the fleet had to compete with the strong flooding tide as they plotted a course running down the harbour to Glovers mark. Peter Biggs and Bob Hodgson and Mervyn Wright and Ron Elliott glided through the fleet closing up on the lead boats. In response to this, Simon and Mike elected to sail deep across towards Brownsea looking to benefit from a lighter tidal flow. This enabled them to sail past the fleet to take the lead at Glovers mark which they managed to hold for the remainder of the race whilst positions were traded regularly behind them.
Alan and Jill allowed the fleet to sail a second circuit before shortening the course just ahead of the heavy rain setting in for the rest of the afternoon.
Colin and Jane sailed well to keep second place. Peter and Bob, jostling for position with Steve and Lisa, narrowly lost out up the last beat with Steve and Lisa taking third.
