So, the Monday evening series kicked off with 27 boats (16x ILCA 6 and 11x ILCA 7) competing. It was fantastic to see so many youth sailors, fresh from practice at the RYA Youth Nationals. The naysayers said there would be no wind (and several sailors cited this for their non-attendance) but the Met Office proved correct once again with 6-7 knots. In both races the fleet did not anticipate the gate-boat windward direction being so far to windward with many not quite making it in time for the perfect gate start.
Race 1 saw a blinder by Col almost leading the race at mark 1 but several sailors unsportingly passed him later in the race. A convincing victory by Hywel (hiking should be banned in these conditions!) as he led the fleet home with Chris and Alan joining him on the podium. In the ILCA 6 Ann led the fleet home with Robin and Tom H making up the podium.
Race 2 had a similar feel to Race 1 with Hywel leading from Chris and Neil in the ILCA 7 and Ann leading Roberta and Tom H (again!) in the ILCA 6. The girls are currently leading the boys but how long for in this series……. Thank you too to the Kuzyk race team.
